Boone, North Carolina

Named after Daniel Boone, this famously picturesque town in North Carolina is home to world-famous scenery and a gentle climate year-round. It is 1 hour 45 mins from Charlotte-Douglas airport, and conveniently close to Winston-Salem and Asheville.

Boone and neighboring Blowing Rock are in the Western Mountains of NC and Home of Appalachian State University.  Outside of campus it has a trendy but quaint small-mountain-town feel with many businesses which cater to the tourist trade.  There are many antique and artisan type shops, and several micro-breweries.  It is at over 3,000 ft in elevation with the surrounding mountains rising up to 5,000 to 6,000 feet.  Summers are very pleasant with average high temps in the low to mid 70's which is one reason it is popular has been a summer resort destination since the early 1800's.  It is an "outdoor" town with lots of recreational opportunities like climbing, whitewater, hiking and trout fishing.  This changing leaves in the fall are also a huge draw and the Blue Ridge Parkway divides the Town of Boone from neighboring Blowing Rock which was the inspiration for Jan Karon's "Mitford" series of bestselling books.

Being a tourist destination there are many lodging and dining options available. Several of the large chain hotels are in town, as well as B&B's, and lodge-style resort properties which are a mainstay. Here are a few:
